Hello and welcome to the Japanese courses at the Language Centre at Paderborn University! We look forward to your participation.

In­form­a­tion about the courses

The courses impart knowledge of modern Japanese and its writing system.
They also prepare students for the internationally recognised Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). Further information on the test can be found at https://www.jki.de/japanische-sprache/jlpt and https://www.jlpt.jp/e/.

Eight levels are offered: Japanese I, III, V and VII in the winter semester, Japanese II and IV, VI and VIII in the summer semester. There is also a conversation course. The following topics are covered in the courses:

  • Japanese I: general information about the Japanese language, its sound and writing system (hiragana), sentence structure and word types; acquisition of basic knowledge of the Japanese language.
  • Japanese II: Consolidation of the knowledge acquired in Japanese I, sound and writing system (hiragana), introduction to kanji characters
  • Japanese III: Systematic teaching of complex grammatical phenomena using authentic texts and a variety of spoken and written exercises; acquisition of further kanji characters.
  • Japanese IV: Further development of writing, listening and reading skills; consolidation of further kanji characters.
  • Japanese V: Consolidation of the knowledge acquired in Japanese IV
  • Japanese VI: extensive exercises to prepare for the JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test).
  • Japanese Oral Communication: For students who have completed at least Japanese V (or Japanese III in exceptional cases)

Learners with no previous knowledge choose course I / A1 / A1.1. Cross-entry to higher levels is possible: please use the global scale as a guide for self-assessment. Please note that attendance is compulsory for the courses and that you are expected to spend 3-6 hours per week preparing for and following up on the course content.
