Hello and welcome to the Arabic courses at the Language Centre at Paderborn University!

Information about the courses

For general information on enrolment and certificates of achievement, please read here.

Four levels are offered, upon successful completion of which level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is achieved.

In the Arabic I course, students gradually acquire the modern Arabic script and the pronunciation of sounds that do not occur in German. They also quickly learn to formulate and understand simple sentences. They also gain an insight into some basic aspects of Arabic grammar (personal pronouns, sun and moon letters and an introduction to conjugating verbs in the present tense).

The Arabic II course builds on level I. In this second course, students learn to understand sentences and frequently used expressions and to communicate in simple, routine situations, such as talking about the family or introducing themselves. By the end of this course, participants will have acquired the most important skills, including nominal clauses, verbal clauses, prepositions, possessive pronouns and more.

The Arabic III course is an in-depth extension of what has been learnt. Here you will deepen your understanding of grammar and language structures (conjugating in the past, adverbs, adjectives, colours, descriptions, tenses and declension).

In the Arabic IV course, you will learn to express yourself in various common everyday situations.

Learners with no previous knowledge choose course I / A1 / A1.1. Cross-entry to higher levels is possible: please use the global scale as a guide for self-assessment. If you have any questions, please contact the ZfS team(zfs@upb.de), who will forward your enquiry to the appropriate teacher if necessary.

Please note that attendance is compulsory for the courses and that you are expected to spend 3-6 hours per week preparing for and following up on the course content.

The Arabic courses at the Paderborn University Language Centre mainly use learning materials prepared by the lecturer. These materials are based on many years of teaching experience in Arabic lessons with non-native students and at the same time offer an insight into the history and culture of the Arab world. Furthermore, additional materials in the course make the logic of the Arabic language and the mentality of the Arabs easier to understand.
