Your path to the DAAD language certificate

  • The DAAD language certificate is a proof of your current language skills.
  • When applying for a semester abroad, students must proof that they have sufficient knowledge of the language of instruction (usually English, French, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, Turkish).
  • Alternatively, proof can be provided by other language certificates (TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge, DELE, DELF/DALF, UNIcert?).
  • For the DAAD language certificate you will go through 3 steps: Registration - Written Placement test - Oral exam.

You do NOT need an extra DAAD language certificate if you fall within the categories below.

In this case, you can have your DAAD certificate issued directly by your corresponding lecturer.

Please fill out the registration form: DAAD Anmeldeformular
Important: After registration you will receive a confirmation by e-mail with the payment request as well as the bank details.

  1. Transfer the fee in the amount of 15€. The fee is non-refundable. Send proof of payment to zfs@upb.de.
Important: If payment has not been made by the day of the exam, you will not be able to take the Placement test.
  2. Take the written Placement test independently (see below).
  • The Placement test takes place at any time during the opening hours of the Mediathek (after registration and before the oral examination) with the help of a computer-based diagnostic language test in the Mediathek (I3.401) of the ZfS.
    • Procedure:
    • Briefing by the media library staff
    • Query of active and passive language competence.
    • Test duration: approx. 1 hour
    • Test results: At the end of each part of the test, the results are noted by the staff and confirmed by signature.
  • Once you have completed the Placement test and the media center staff has noted your results, you can get an appointment for the oral exam on site.
  • The pre-assessment as well as the assessment of the speaking skills will take place in the course of a 30-minute examination with a language teacher. This exam usually consists of two parts:
    • You will read a text (e.g. newspaper article) in the target language. Following the preparation time, you will answer some questions in written form.
    • Afterwards, the teacher will ask you further questions (in the target language) about the planned study visit, previous study focus, previous experiences abroad and the target country.
  • Is the DAAD language certificate sufficient for the application for my semester abroad?
    • In any case (independent from the target country or partner university), the DAAD language certificate is sufficient for the application.
    • In some cases, TOEFL is required as proof of language in the USA, Australia and Asia, while some partner universities also accept the DAAD language certificate. For detailed information, please refer to the respective description of the partner university under "Sonstiges". Unfortunately, the media library team does not have any detailed information on this.

    • Since the TOEFL certificate is only valid for 2 years, the exam should only be taken after acceptance.

  • What level of language do I need when applying for my semester abroad?

    • You can find detailed information on this in the respective description of the partner university under "Sonstiges". Unfortunately, the media library team does not have any detailed information on this.

  • How do I make an appointment for the DAAD language certificate?

    • You can take the written Placement test during opening hours of the media library (for more information see 3b). You do not need a separate appointment!

    • After the written Placement test, make an appointment for the oral exam directly on site with the media library staff (see 3c for more information).

  • When will I receive my DAAD language certificate?

    • The issuance of the DAAD language certificate can take up to 3 weeks. If you need the certificate for an application, then please plan to attend in time.

Important information from the International Office

  • The DAAD language certificate is always sufficient for the application (regardless of the destination country and partner university).
  • In some cases, the TOEFL is required as proof of language proficiency for the USA, Australia and Asia, but some partner universities accept the DAAD language certificate as an alternative to the TOEFL. Detailed information on this can be found in the respective description of the partner university under "Other".
As the TOEFL certificate is only valid for 2 years, the exam should only be taken after you have been accepted.
