This Co-Lab event will explore challenges related to mental health and body image in the context of equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), and develop solutions to improve body image and mental well-being.
The CoLab is focusing on the topic of Body Image which includes appearance (looks) and function (abilities) of the body. Body image dissatisfaction can be considered a global mental health concern as outlined in the Sustainable Development Goal 3 of the UN (Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages). Addressing mental health and body image concerns is particularly important in the context of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI). EDI research and goals target – but are not limited to – groups such as female and LGBTQ+ persons, people with disabilities and disfigurements, people with economic hardships and persons with a migrant or international background.
Body dissatisfaction can have negative impacts on mental health, such as body dysmorphia, eating disorders and depression and anxiety. A positive body image, on the other hand, can lead to positive health behaviours such as skin screening, seeking medical attention, and sun protection.
Instead of one-size-fits-all solutions, this CoLab aims at designing interventions that work equitably across diverse communities, recognising their specific needs and strengths as well as scalable, age-appropriate interventions that promote both physical and mental wellbeing across educational, public health, and digital platforms.
