Artificial intelligence in teaching

Welcome to the information page on Artificial Intelligence in Teaching at Paderborn University! In an increasingly digital and networked world, artificial intelligence (AI) plays a central role in shaping the future of education and science. The integration of AI into teaching is becoming increasingly important. Teachers should be aware that AI-based technologies are changing the learning environment and will therefore also have an impact on examination formats and assessments. Our university has set itself the task of actively researching and utilising the possibilities of AI in order to promote innovation in teaching and to prepare students and teachers for the challenges of the modern working world in the best possible way.

This website offers you an overview of the many facets of artificial intelligence and its integration into the teaching and learning processes at our university. We invite you to take a closer look at this exciting topic.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to fundamentally change the educational landscape by individualising and optimising learning processes. Intelligent tutoring systems, for example, can improve students' learning success by providing personalised feedback and adapting learning content to the needs of each individual.

The use of AI in teaching brings with it ethical challenges. This starts with data protection, extends to the training data and the BIAS present in the data and questions of fairness, as access to technological resources and digital competence may be unequally distributed.

The"Guideline for the use of text-generating AI tools in studying and teaching at Paderborn University" provides the framework for the responsible use of AI at our university. Teachers are given the freedom to decide when and to what extent AI tools should be used or excluded in teaching, depending on the specific requirements of different subject areas and teaching methods.

The use of AI in teaching not only serves to make learning more engaging and effective, but also to prepare students for a future in which technological skills will become increasingly important. Paderborn University strives to utilise these future-oriented possibilities and integrate them into everyday education in order to continue to provide high-quality and innovative education.

Paderborn University has therefore been providing data protection-compliant access to AI for teaching staff and students since June 2024. All instructions can be found in the help portal.

In our digitalised world, the promotion of skills in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important. Key learning objectives, which are also derived from the EU AI Act, include

  1. Developing a comprehensive awareness of the potential opportunities and risks of AI and the potential harm it can cause.
  2. The ability to use AI systems in an informed and well-founded manner.
  3. The ability to make informed decisions in connection with AI, in compliance with the relevant rights and obligations.

These learning objectives go beyond technical knowledge and emphasise the importance of an ethical and informed approach to AI technologies.

By developing these competences, everyone can contribute to the safe and efficient use of AI in a variety of fields, while always considering the social and ethical implications.

Further information on bias and filters in artificial intelligence, hallucinations and validation of information in AI, high-risk applications of AI in higher education and more, can be found in the ZIM:HelpWiki

The Office for Educational Innovation and University Didactics at Paderborn University offers regular workshops and weekly AI consultations on the latest developments and applications of AI in teaching. All offers can also be found on the overview page.

Students and lecturers who would like to deepen their knowledge in the field of artificial intelligence can attend training courses offered by KI.edu.NRW or the KI-Campus free of charge in addition to the university's own programmes.

In addition, handouts containing detailed information on various aspects of artificial intelligence are available on the university's website. These handouts serve as a valuable resource for anyone who wants to understand and promote the integration of AI into educational processes.
