Study and course selection

Choice of course
As an exchange student, you can generally choose from all courses offered at Paderborn University.
You can find all the courses on offer in our campus management system PAUL (click on "Menu" at the top right, then you will find the "Course Catalogue" on the left in the middle). The courses for the coming semester are published approximately two months before the start of the lecture period (mid-January for the summer semester / mid-July for the winter semester).
- Courses of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics can be found in the module catalogue of the faculty as well as detailed information in the module handbook. Please click here. (Please click on "Courses in English available for Exchange Students" and the corresponding semester in the drop-down menu).
- Information on English-language degree programmes at Paderborn University can be found here. The courses of these degree programmes are open to exchange students in the Master's programme and advanced Bachelor's students, provided they have sufficient prior knowledge of the specific course.
- To obtain an overview of all English-language courses within a semester, open the course catalogue, select the semester and click on "English-language courses".
- Students of economics can find here detailed information about the exchange programme at Paderborn University.
- Students of cultural studies can find here detailed information about the exchange programme at Paderborn University.
Worth knowing

For participants in the Erasmus+ programme, the Learning Agreement is mandatory and the submission of a fully signed Learning Agreement document is a prerequisite for receiving the Erasmus+ scholarship. We do not set a deadline for our incoming exchange students. However, your home university usually has a deadline, so please enquire about this in good time.
If the course catalogue is not yet available, you can use the courses from previous semesters as a guide. When you come to Paderborn, your Learning Agreement is often only provisional. It can easily be changed at the start of lectures once you have decided which courses you will actually attend. Then talk to your academic coordinator in Paderborn and fill out the Learning Agreement - Changes together with him/her.
Further information on the Digital Learning Agreement(DLA) and Online Learning Agreement(OLA) for Erasmus+ students can be found here.
Students who are not participating in the Erasmus+ programme should discuss with their coordinator at their home university whether they need a Learning Agreement.

At the beginning of your stay at Paderborn University, there are specific introductory events or individual counselling sessions in the faculties for all subject areas. You will receive further information on this from the International Office in good time.
It is not usually necessary to register for courses before your stay. Exception: Economics students have the opportunity to register for some courses in advance approximately six weeks before the start of the semester. You will receive information on this from the faculty in good time.

Examinations usually take place within 2-3 weeks after the official end of the lecture period. In some cases, examinations may take place later! It is therefore essential that you find out about the examination dates on site in Paderborn and enquire directly with your respective faculty and professors.

Your transcript of records will list all courses/modules that are registered in the campus management system PAUL with an examination, including your German courses (intensive course March/September and/or semester course).
The document will be issued by the International Office after all your grades have been approved by your tutors in PAUL. Our tutors are required to provide the grades no later than five weeks after the end of the examination period. In PAUL you can check for yourself whether and which grades you are still missing. You have access to PAUL as long as you are enrolled at UPB.
As soon as all your results are available, your transcript will be created as quickly as possible and uploaded to your Mobility Online account . At the same time, you will be informed by email that you can download it. If you wish, a copy can also be sent to your home university by email or by post.
Please note: all courses/modules for which you are registered for an examination will be shown on your transcript. Therefore, check in good time during the deregistration deadlines whether you are correctly registered in PAUL or deregister from examinations in good time if a course should not appear on your transcript. You will receive more detailed information on this in the introductory lectures or by email during the semester.
If you write an individual thesis (e.g. Bachelor's or Master's thesis) during your time at UPB, which is (co-)supervised here at UPB, this can be included in the transcript. In this case, please contact Mrs Nicole Struzek and provide her with the following details:
- Title of your thesis
- Name and e-mail contact of the supervisor at the faculty
- Expected number of ECTS.
As soon as we receive the information, we will contact your UPB supervisor and enter your project manually in your Transcript of Records.

To access your account in the campus management system PAUL you will need a TAN number. You will only receive this once you have paid the semester fee and if you have a digital health insurance certificate for the duration of your stay. This certificate can only be issued by a German health insurance company, which you must contact yourself in advance. You can find further information here.
If the above conditions are met, you will receive your TAN during the respective office hours either at the International Office (Building I, 4th floor, Room I 4.201 or I 4.204) or at the Notebook Café (Building I, UG, Room I0.401). For a secure transmission of the TAN, e.g. before travelling, it can also be uploaded to your personal Mobility Online Account and downloaded by you.
