History of Paderborn University

With its modern profile, Paderborn University, founded in 1972, builds on the university tradition of the city of Paderborn. It emerged from several predecessor institutions - the largest of which were the Paderborn College of Education and the South East Westphalia University of Applied Sciences. In August 1971, the Paderborn, H?xter, Meschede and Soest Schools of Engineering, the Paderborn College of Business Administration and the Soest College of Agricultural Engineering were merged into this university of applied sciences. The Baugewerkschule has the longest tradition of all the predecessor institutions. In the year Paderborn University was founded, it could already look back on over 100 years of history.

The predecessor facilities

In1614 , Prince-Bishop Dietrich von Fürstenberg founded the first Westphalian university in Paderborn - with a theological and a philosophical faculty - which was continued as an ecclesiastical university after secularisation in the state of Prussia. In 1946, the first year after the war, a university committee was formed in Paderborn - on the occasion of the establishment of the Pedagogical Academy - with the aim of continuing this university tradition. However, its endeavours were initially unsuccessful. It was not until 27 April 1971 that a cabinet decision by the state government determined that Paderborn would once again become the seat of a university.

From the foundation until today

1972

Paderborn University of Applied Sciences

Paderborn University was founded as a comprehensive university on 1 August 1972 and construction began in October 1972.

When Paderborn University was founded, institutions that were very different in terms of history, self-image and locations had to be brought together. The university's founding senate with its founding rector Prof Dr Broder Carstensen therefore had a considerable amount of work to do. New study and examination regulations had to be drawn up for all 17 departments with a total of 87 degree programmes at the four campuses in Paderborn, H?xter, Meschede and Soest. The Senate decided on the size of the individual departments as well as their material and personnel resources. It drew up development plans and determined the university's future research priorities.

1975

Paderborn University

In 1975, three years after the founding of Paderborn University of Applied Sciences, the founding senate decided to change the name. Instead of "Gesamthochschule Paderborn", the educational institution was now to be called "Paderborn University". However, the right to use the name "University" was only granted to the comprehensive universities by law in 1980, meaning that Paderborn University was only renamed Paderborn University on 1 January 1980.

1980

Further development

The concentration of study programmes promoted by the state did not leave Paderborn unscathed. In the 1980s, the subject areas of civil engineering/architecture in H?xter and the social sciences teaching degree programme for secondary levels I and II were discontinued. The importance and scope of individual disciplines have also changed considerably since the university was founded. Whereas in 1972 the focus of education was still on the humanities and engineering sciences, the fields of economics and computer science have since seen the strongest growth.

1990

Consolidation phase

After the founding phase was completed in the mid-1980s, the expansion of the university continued apace. The number of students rose rapidly from an initial 4,400 in the winter semester (WS) 1972/73. The originally planned maximum limit of 6,000 students was already reached in the winter semester 1976/77 and in 1999, more than 15,000 students were enrolled at Paderborn University with its departments in H?xter, Meschede and Soest.

2003

Paderborn University

Since the beginning of 2003, the former Paderborn University has officially been called "Paderborn University". It is now located exclusively in Paderborn on the campus on Stra?e and in the building on Fürstenallee.

The restructuring phase from 2000 to 2002 also included a new organisation of the university into five faculties: I. Faculty of Arts and Humanities, II. Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, III. Faculty of Science, IV. Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and V. Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Mathematics. An even greater intensification of interdisciplinary co-operation and a sharpening of the profile were some of the main reasons for the far-reaching changes. The departments were under the umbrella of the university until the end of 2001 and have since become part of the Lippe and H?xter University of Applied Sciences and the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences.

2007

University Council

Following changes to the state's legal framework, a university council was institutionalised as a significant innovation.

At its meeting on 25 April 2007, the University Senate confirmed the University Council. The University was thus the first university in North Rhine-Westphalia to officially institution such a body. The University Council began its work in June 2007.

2008

Presidium

The amendment to the law also created the option for NRW universities to continue to elect a rectorate as their governing body or to create a presidential structure. Paderborn University has had a Presidential Board in office since the beginning of 2008.

2010

Expansion

The 2010s start with campus expansions - especially in the Paderborn urban area. The Paderborn campus near Fürstenallee develops into an important location for innovation and research in the region with the ZM1 (2010) and ZM2 (2020) research buildings. Additional laboratory, learning and work spaces are also created, including the institution of the AStA Stadtcampus (2019). In 2016, the number of students exceeds 20,000 for the first time.

Publications

Numerous publications on the history of Paderborn University can be viewed/borrowed from the University Library:

Heinz Nixdorf - The computer pioneer as patron of Paderborn University

Heinz Nixdorf was a visionary entrepreneur - for Paderborn as a university location as a whole and in particular for the Heinz Nixdorf Institute as an interdisciplinary research centre for computer science and technology. He was convinced that successful, innovative development could only be guaranteed if industry and research provided mutual impetus. This foresight, combined with Nixdorf's decisive actions and generous decisions, continue to have an impact on the university to this day.
