Let's Play History! Historical Culture between Gaming and Content Creation

Overview

The “Let's Play History!” project is the first in the German-speaking world to focus on the concept of streaming and Let's Play historical games. While intensive research is already being conducted on computer games with historical content, we want to make the commentary level the center of the discussion. Streamers can rightly be considered distributors, if not multipliers, of historical content, as they not only make the historically motivated games accessible to a wider public, but also talk about the “history” underneath the game itself. Terms such as “World War II feeling” or “real” are used, which not only (can) refer to the gaming experience, but much more to the question of whether the gaming experience authentically reflects the past. The fact that this is not possible anyway is irrelevant - but it does make it clear how closely the relationship between the game and history is viewed. This commentary in turn helps to shape the viewers' image of history. The conference and the resulting anthology, as well as the materials for teacher training, are intended to address precisely this interface and bring together people from academia, the streaming scene, political education and consumers.
