The AI-literate Researchers - A Model of AI Literacy for Researchers
Overview
Artificial intelligence (AI) is ubiquitous and has permeated nearly all aspects of life. More than ever before, AI is now also being utilized in research. For example, AI can uncover new patterns within data analysis, make more accurate predictions, and suggest solutions to complex problems. Furthermore, it can be employed in the form of large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT or Google Gemini to draft scientific publications. Consequently, researchers must contextualize, evaluate, and integrate AI-generated information into the research process. As a result, the entire research process is now influenced by artificial intelligence. From an educational science perspective, this raises the question of which competencies researchers require to effectively utilize AI in the research process, while also taking _responsibility for their research and thus ensuring its integrity_. To address this, this research project will derive competency expectations for researchers by first conducting a content analysis of research outputs (e.g., articles, online/video tutorials, workshops, etc.). The resulting model of an AI-literate researcher will then be validated by experts using the Nominal Group Technique (NGT) and further developed throughout the project. The resulting model can then serve as a basis for the planning, design, and support of informal and formal learning processes to enhance researcher AI literacy and ensure the long-term integrity of research in the age of artificial intelligence.
