Another step towards a future-proof and sustainable IT infrastructure at Paderborn University: the shell of the extension to the data centre in Building X has been completed. Special attention is being paid to energy efficiency.

The Paderborn Center for Parallel Computing (PC2) is an integral part of Paderborn University's digital infrastructure, a location for use by other universities in North Rhine-Westphalia and one of nine nationwide centres for National High Performance Computing (NHR). Scientists will find a secure and powerful platform for their cutting-edge research here. However, with the upcoming commissioning of the second supercomputer "Otus", the current building is reaching its supply limits.

The extension will increase the electrical power and cooling supply to over 4 megawatts in future to meet the growing demands of researchers. "We are thus strengthening high-performance computing and making a future-proof investment for Paderborn University," says Prof Dr Christian Plessl, Director of PC2. The systems are cooled all year round with approx. 95 percent indirect free cooling to minimise the environmental impact. In addition, the waste heat is transferred to neighbouring buildings for use. Once completed, the building extension will therefore fulfil the requirements for certification with the "Blue Angel" eco-label.

"We are proud that we have successfully implemented this important milestone on time and on budget together with the Bielefeld building and property management company," says a delighted Dr Martina Gerdes-Kühn, head of the building department.
