International competition "Art in architecture"

On Wednesday, 10 September, at 11 a.m., the finalist exhibition of the international competition "Art in Architecture" will open, in which works were to be developed for the outdoor space of the "European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts" (ECMWF) in Bonn. The Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning in Berlin (BBR) had called for proposals for the competitions, each worth around half a million euros. The design by the team led by art professor Alexandra Kürtz and her colleagues Saskia Detmar and Isabel Pallas from the textile subject area at Paderborn University convinced the high-calibre jury right through to the final selection round. They are now among the 13 finalists. First place went to Julian Charrière, Berlin, and Thomas Stricker, Düsseldorf.

With their installation "Atmospheres of Science", Prof Kürtz, Detmar and Pallas said they wanted to "visualise the invisible dynamics of the atmosphere". Weather balloons, symbolic of the 27 European countries, were to change their colours with the help of real-time weather data and thus make the diversity of meteorological processes tangible. By using robust, durable materials such as Cordura and Kevlar as well as energy-efficient LED technology, the design combined artistic expressiveness with a clear commitment to sustainability. In addition, organically shaped seating objects were planned to invite visitors to interact and reflect directly.

The exhibition shows the models on a scale of 1:50 as well as accompanying poster designs.

The vernissage and matinee will take place on 10 September from 11 a.m. in the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning, Large Conference Hall, in Bonn. The exhibition can be visited until 19 September and will be accessible online on the BBR website until 25 September.
