The Philipp Schwartz Initiative, established by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, enables universities and research institutions in Germany to host at-risk researchers through fellowship funding. The 16th call for applications has now been launched, and institutions are invited to submit proposals for the admission of at-risk researchers. Eligible candidates are scholars who can provide credible evidence of being at risk, irrespective of their academic discipline or country of origin. Please note that individual applications by researchers themselves are not permitted; applications must be submitted by the host institutions. Funding is available for an initial research fellowship of up to 24 months. An extension of up to 12 additional months may be requested during the initial funding period within the framework of a co-financing model.
Paderborn University has previously supported three at-risk scholars through this programme. Institutions interested in hosting a scholar but not currently in contact with a suitable candidate may consult the list maintained by Scholars at Risk, which offers profiles of at-risk researchers actively seeking positions in Germany: For those considering an application, the Welcome Services for International Researchers and Employees are available to provide advice and support throughout the application process. Comprehensive programme information and eligibility criteria can be found on the website of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative.
Application deadline is 22 August 2025.
