Spotlight on Safety and Visibility: Road Safety Day at Paderborn University

Numerous neon yellow safety vests created a vivid presence in the bustling library foyer and at the main entrance of Paderborn University, marking a day devoted to traffic visibility and road safety.

As Autumn is considered a season of increased risk to accidents, it was an ideal opportunity for the Occupational Health & Safety and Environmental Protection Section to host a full-day event on safe mobility. Whether on foot, by bike, e-scooter or car: the aim was to raise awareness among students and staff of the dangers of road traffic and to increase safety on the way to university and in everyday life through prevention and information.

In addition to a wide range of information and counselling services, interactive hands-on activities in particular attracted a great deal of interest. With the help of a distraction simulator, alcohol goggles, the so-called gaffer box or an e-scooter simulator, the participants were able to experience realistically how quickly risks arise in road traffic - and how important mutual consideration is.

Despite the changeable weather, many visitors also used the rollover and impact simulators set up outside. The high level of participation showed the great personal interest in mobility topics and the willingness to actively engage with road safety.

A special highlight was the NeMo.bil-Cab, a prototype from the "New Mobility Paderborn" (NeMo) initiative led by initiator Prof Dr Thomas Tr?ster. The aim of the project is to develop and prototype an innovative mobility system for the needs-based transport of people and goods.

"The high level of interest confirms how important the topic of road safety is - especially at a time when our mobility is constantly changing," emphasises Diana Riedel, Head of Occupational Safety, Health and Environmental Protection. "With practical activities and illustrative examples, we were able to show how prevention works in everyday life."

The great popularity of the event proved the organisers right: the interest in the offers was unmistakable and made it clear that mobility - with the growing variety of means of transport - is more topical than ever.

You can find a list of exhibitors here. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

  • ADAC
Road safety has always been a key concern for ADAC e. V.. To this end, ADAC is committed to accident prevention throughout Germany through education, tests and active driving safety training. ADAC OWL e. V. also contributes to the promotion of safe coexistence in road traffic with a wide range of offers.
The focus is always on respectful and cooperative interaction between all road users - regardless of the chosen means of transport. The ADAC is not only committed to the safety of car drivers, but also to the interests of cyclists, pedestrians and all other road users.
At the ADAC OWL e. V. stand, you can find reaction tests as well as eye tests, which focus on colour recognition and information reception, for example. Employees from the ADAC OWL traffic department and the ADAC OWL driving training centre in Paderborn will also be on hand to provide information about the ADAC's campaigns and offers in East Westphalia-Lippe to improve road safety.

  • Caritas Paderborn - addiction prevention and health promotion
At our Paderborn addiction centre, everything revolves around the topic of alcohol and drug consumption and the question "How safe am I really on the road?" With our "intoxication goggles", you can experience at first hand how a state of intoxication affects perception and reaction and how difficult simple tasks suddenly become. Whether it's about the consumption of addictive substances or other topics relating to counselling and support - you are welcome to contact us and we will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

  • Crashtest-Service
Crashtest-Service GmbH (CTS) is an independent test and development centre with a focus on vehicle safety and innovative testing technologies. We support industry and research with customised test solutions - from classic crash tests to modern special tests. A particular highlight is our biofidelic dummy, which simulates human behaviour in accidents much more realistically than conventional test dummies. Thanks to its anatomical and biomechanical design, it provides data that is closer to reality and thus significantly advances research. In university research in particular, the dummy opens up new opportunities to better understand injury mechanisms and further develop safety concepts. In this way, CTS combines scientific precision with practical application for greater road safety.

  • LIA - Leichtbau im Automobil (Paderborn University)
Lightweight construction and crash safety - thinking together
Lower energy and resource consumption is crucial for sustainable mobility. Lightweight construction is a key technology for making vehicles more efficient and environmentally friendly. At the same time, the safety of the occupants in the event of an accident must not be compromised.
Innovative hybrid systems are being developed at the Chair that combine these sometimes contradictory requirements. This results in structures that are both lightweight and particularly crash-proof. The research focuses on the simulative design, experimental validation and manufacture of these complex components.
The result: vehicle structures that significantly increase passive safety in road traffic and thus make an important contribution to road safety.
In addition, the chair also conducts research into active safety concepts - such as autonomous, swarm-based modes of transport that open up new possibilities for safe and efficient public transport.

  • Emergency pastoral care in the Paderborn district
After sudden disasters, not only medical but also emotional first aid is often needed. Emergency counsellors provide support to relatives in countless operations - after road accidents, sudden deaths or suicides. We are often the ones who break the news of a death together with the police or stay with the bereaved in the first few hours after a stroke of fate. Emergency counselling and emergency pastoral care in the district of Paderborn works on a voluntary basis and the team is on call around the clock.

  • Paderkindeleben

  • NRW police
Traffic accident prevention is one of the cornerstones of road safety work. Speeding, not keeping enough distance, mistakes when turning, disregarding red lights, distraction, an aggressive driving style, overestimating one's own abilities, alcohol and drug consumption, lack of consideration, lack of respect for life - these are the causes and issues that traffic accident prevention works on. The aim is always to bring about a change in behaviour in road traffic in order to prevent serious and fatal accidents. Responsible and considerate behaviour on the part of all road users is the basic prerequisite for reducing road accidents. This is why road safety advisors from the district police authority are available for prevention events, training courses and lessons.

  • City of Paderborn
The City of Paderborn provides information on current urban mobility planning issues in the southern part of the city.
The focus is on the neighbourhood mobility concept currently being developed, which analyses the traffic situation around the university and aims to make improvements for all road users. Interested parties are cordially invited to participate in the participation formats - for example by taking part in the ongoing online survey at univiertel-umfrage.mitmachen.app or in the local transport check on 8 November. Contribute your perspective - as a local resident, as a user of the routes or simply as someone who knows their neighbourhood well.
In addition, the city staff are happy to receive comments and suggestions on cycling and walking routes or other aspects of everyday mobility and are available for personal discussions.

  • Techniker Krankenkasse
Techniker Krankenkasse sees itself as a health partner for its policyholders. It is supporting the Road Safety Day at Paderborn University with two offers: "Bike Fitting" and "VR Bike".

  • Minden-Lübbecke & Paderborn road safety centres
We want people to be safe on the road - at all stages of life! As every single person is called upon to play a part, we see our work as an educational mission: we explain the dangers and show how they can be avoided or circumvented.
Our appeal: People and their safety first - if everyone takes this principle seriously and decides and acts accordingly, the road accident statistics may soon be better.
  • Distraction simulator - How is your concentration while driving? Here you can test how easily you can be distracted.

  • Alcohol goggles - Have you always wanted to know how your body perception and abilities change under the influence of alcohol? Try it out safely here.

  • Impact simulator - Here you can experience the forces involved in a low-speed car accident up close.
