What and for whom are the InRegioFIT workshops?

In the 2-3 day workshops, typical study situations are scrutinised and language skills are practised in these situations. This includes, for example, preparing for exams, oral exams or writing theses, but also organising your own everyday study life, dealing correctly with AI and writing applications and conducting job interviews.

The workshops are aimed at international students and doctoral candidates at Paderborn University, exchange students from partner universities and German learners on DSH courses.

What do we do there?

Through input from the workshop leaders and concrete examples, orientation knowledge on the various topics is imparted. In individual, pair and group exercises, you will develop strategies for successful study/application and generally appropriate language behaviour in various situations. At the same time, you will learn to correctly assess your own strengths and weaknesses and to further develop your (language) skills in a targeted manner.

The following questions, among others, will be answered in the various workshops:

  • How can I effectively integrate AI into my language work at university?
  • How do I write polite emails to lecturers in order to receive targeted support?
  • Which methods help me to avoid writer's block?
  • How can I prepare myself well (linguistically and subject-wise) for written and oral exams?
  • Can I be understood well? What can I do to make myself easier to understand?
  • How do I check my term paper for comprehensibility, structure and linguistic correctness?
  • How can I deal with exam anxiety?
  • How do I recognise what is expected of me in a call for proposals? How do I write a suitable application?

When will the next workshop take place and how can I register?

You can find all workshops with the option to register in PAUL.

If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to jennifer.mueller@upb.de.

Exams are an integral part of every degree programme and are often decisive for success in a course. However, exams often differ significantly depending on the subject area (e.g. exams in German Literature or Mechanical Engineering), type of course (e.g. in a seminar or a lecture) and time in the degree programme (introductory course or specialisation module). In this workshop you will therefore learn, among other things

  • how to find out what you are likely to face in an exam (linguistically and subject-wise),
  • how you can prepare for an exam during the semester and
  • how you can prevent exam stress or anxiety and start the exam phase with confidence.

Using concrete examples, this workshop will provide you with an overview of typical exam types at German universities and the types of texts and writing assignments they contain. At the same time, you will practise correctly assessing your own strengths and weaknesses in terms of self-management and time management, learning strategies, linguistic and technical skills and knowledge of the content to be learnt and draw conclusions for successful preparation.

In this workshop, you will learn how you can integrate Generative Artificial Intelligence into your learning process in a targeted and practical way. Both the strengths and limitations of AI in the context of learning German will be highlighted in order to use the technology effectively for different communicative goals.

The workshop will provide practical approaches that facilitate and support German learning, whether for quick assistance or the development of long-term, individual learning strategies. A particular focus is on support with academic writing. You will learn how to use AI tools to improve your writing skills - from structuring formal texts and developing clear argumentation to optimising linguistic precision.
In addition, the multimodality of AI is used to train all language skills - reading, writing, listening and speaking - both individually and in combination. You will learn how to effectively integrate the AI's multilingualism into your language work.
Another focus is on the voice function, which allows you to simulate realistic conversations, improve your pronunciation and practise linguistic and communicative appropriateness in different contexts.

Studying successfully can mean many things, e.g. gaining exciting experiences, preparing for an interesting career or testing and developing your own skills. It can be difficult to keep track of everything. In this workshop, you will gain an insight into the various fields of everyday student life, including

  • Orientation on campus: for example, where are there good places to study/ the best coffee/ support with questions? What sports/cultural/social programmes are available at the university?
  • Self and time management: When am I particularly efficient and when should I take a break? How and when do I study for exams, read specialised literature and improve my language skills?
  • Academic work: What does 'studying for an exam' actually mean? How do I deal with scientific terms and text types correctly? And how can I write good texts myself?

The aim of the workshop is to make it easier to start studying at Paderborn University. Input from the workshop leaders will provide orientation knowledge, strategies for a successful start to student life will be developed in small groups and typical everyday situations at a university will be discussed together.
