The new electronic student registration procedure for statutory health insurance companies
Since 1 January 2022, the new electronic student registration procedure has been in force throughout Germany: Students notify a statutory health insurance company of their choice at which university they are studying. The health insurance company then reports this data electronically to the university.
In certain cases, students can be exempted from the statutory health insurance obligation. This is usually the case, for example, if you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Important: In this case too, you must first contact a statutory German health insurance company so that they can digitally transmit the exemption to the university.
Data transfer between health insurance companies and universities takes place exclusively electronically throughout Germany. Without the digital notification of your health insurance status, you cannot be enrolled.
-> Please always contact a statutory German health insurance company - either to take out health insurance or for an exemption!
