Please note: An exchange can only take place with a partner university of Paderborn University.

  • The application has to be submitted first to the International Office of your home university, which nominates all selected applicants to Paderborn University.
  • After a successful nomination, you will receive all necessary information regarding the online application by e-mail. In the online application form, you need to enter your data required for enrolment at Paderborn University and you can specify your wishes regarding accommodation, German course and buddy programme. You will also receive further information about your stay and how to prepare for it.
  • After a successful application, all applicants will receive a letter of admission and - shortly before your arrival - an offer of accommodation (if requested and available) and the contact details of your buddy in Paderborn.

Important: The application deadlines must be met! We regret that we cannot accept late applications. Furthermore, accommodation can no longer be guaranteed and you may have to organise your own accommodation.

Re­quire­ments

Please register at the International Office within the first few days of your arrival in Paderborn. This can also be done by email. Please indicate your exact date of arrival (dd/mm/yy). You will also need to take a few steps to register at the university and in the city. Your buddy can help you with this.

Your enrolment is complete when both your semester fee and your proof of health insurance have been received in your PAUL account.

Health insurance is necessary in order to be able to study in Paderborn! All students in Germany must have valid health insurance. Further information here.

The student ID card is an identification document that certifies enrolment (matriculation) at the university. The card is only valid for one semester and also serves as a library card. It authorises you to use the university's IT services and to pay the reduced student price in the canteen and other university institutions. After your enrollment is completed, you can download your student ID card as well as the certificate of enrolment in PAUL. You will receive instructions from the International Office once your enrolment is completed.

The semester ticket is a ticket for students for local public transport (buses, trams, underground trains, light rail and all local trains in North Rhine-Westphalia) valid for one semester. The cost of the ticket is included in the semester fee, which must be paid upon enrolment or re-registration at German universities. Currently the semester ticket includes also the Germany ticket for unlimited travel on all local and regional public transport in Germany. All information on the semester ticket is available here.

General information

  • The validity of the student ID/semester ticket is always limited to one semester (Oct - March / April - Sept).
  • Newly enrolled students can use the semester ticket on certain routes in/around Paderborn in the month before the semester starts (March/September). If the Germany ticket is included, it can be used all over Germany in specific trains.
  • The semester fee amounts to approx. 350 EUR.

Please note: Semester ticket and student ID are availble once the enrolment/re-registration for the respective semester has been successful (visible in PAUL under My data > Personal data > Semester status). The download of the semester ticket and/or student ID is only possible after receipt of your payment in PAUL!

During your studies in Paderborn, it is advisable to open a German bank account. Some banks offer this free of charge. Within the EU, transfers to Germany are uusually unproblematic for a small fee.
