“Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists” hosts IAPh World Congress
The world congress of the “International Association of Women Philosophers” (IAPh), founded in Germany in 1976, will take place in Paderborn for the first time this year. The venue is the globally active “Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists” (HWPS) at the University of Paderborn, which in recent years has gained an international reputation. From Sunday, July 18, to Wednesday, July 21, a pioneering program is on the schedule under the slogan “Defining the Future, Rethinking the Past”.
More than 160 speakers from all over the world will discuss the future of economy, ecology and technology. Topics include the femicides in South America, the role of religion in the oppression of women, women philosophers in Arab countries, and the idea of global health. Thus, more than 60 lectures will present the achievements and ideas of women in the history of philosophy. Mission Statement for IAPh’s 18th Symposium
Professor Ruth Hagengruber, head of the philosophy department and director of the HWPS at Paderborn University, is delighted to host the event. As head of the research association “Women in the History of Philosophy” of the German Society for Philosophy and member of the IAPh board, she has formulated a mission statement for the IAPh world congress in Paderborn: “In times of great global concern, rapid technological development and economic turbulence, we invite women to present their ideas of the future and to reassess the past with a critical eye. In the last few centuries, women’s voices have been supressed to differing extents in almost all countries and cultures of the world. Forming the future of society in a new and united way is a big challenge. Women must raise their voices and shape the future actively.”
The congress will be a hybrid event. Some speakers will hold their talks in Paderborn. All of the lectures, workshops and sessions can also be attended via live-stream. In addition to the program, the beginnings of the IAPh in Germany will be celebrated before the congress moves to another continent in two years.

As the first research center of its kind, the HWPS is dedicated to the research of women in the history of philosophy and science. Together with collaborative partners from Australia, Israel, Canada, the U.S. and many European countries, the center has established a large network in this research area and is internationally leading in the field.
