Freshers Welcome Ceremony with new colourful supporting programme
Start of the winter semester: On Tuesday, 7 October, Paderborn University welcomed the new first semester students in Lecture Hall G. A total of 3,081 students (provisional status) are starting a new academic chapter and setting the course for their professional and personal future. Of these students, 2,050 are embarking on a university degree programme for the first time, while 821 are embarking on a Master's degree programme. The group of teacher training programmes comprises 656 students. The final enrolment and student numbers will be known at the beginning of November, as the enrolment deadlines for the lottery procedure and for the Master's degree programmes are still running. In addition, the application deadlines for Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes with open admissions are open until 15 October. This means that enrolments will be added by last-minute applicants.
The welcome programme began with a musical prelude by the Paderborn band "Animat". The three musicians got to know each other at Paderborn University. University President Prof. Dr. Matthias Bauer then addressed the first-semester students: "Here we are together today - at the beginning of your new journey - and I am delighted that you have chosen Paderborn University. Every lecture hall, every discussion evening, every moment together in the library or on campus is a new building block in your future. Be curious about the topics and the people you will meet here. Because real opportunities open up here: for knowledge, encounters and valuable memories for life."
Prof. Dr. Beate Flath, Vice President for Teaching, Studies and Quality Management, also welcomed the first-semester students and emphasised the unique diversity offered by Paderborn University and the city of Paderborn: "Paderborn University is more than just a place of learning. It is a place of encounter, diversity and co-determination. With a wide range of study programmes, numerous opportunities to get involved and a lively student culture, you can grow not only professionally but also personally. We are delighted that you are here. Please feel very welcome!"
Mo Falke, the new Chair of the General Students' Committee (AStA), then welcomed the first-semester students and gave an insight into the various tasks of the student representatives. As a special highlight this year, the new students can look forward to a colourful supporting programme for the Freshers Welcome Ceremony. This includes, for example, a "band night" organised by the AStA.
After the welcoming speeches, the first-semester students were invited to a get-together with catering - and lecture theatre G was transformed into the "Ersti-Lounge". In addition to the subject-related programmes, students can spend three days finding out about everyday student life and make their first contacts at events, fitness courses run by the university sports team or a healthy smoothie bar while getting to know Paderborn University.
