New "recharge bike" revitalises the Paderborn University campus

With three wheels, a solar roof and lots of extras, the new "recharge bike" from Paderborn University's Student Health Management (SGM) brings a breath of fresh air to the lunch break. The special bike is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12.45 pm to 3 pm between the G lecture theatre and the Grill Café - with free games and break material such as Viking chess or badminton.

"We based the design of the customised 'recharge bike' on the wishes of the students," explains Lena Wobbe, SGM employee. The core idea is unchanged from the previous model: The vehicle is intended to invite students to get some exercise or take a short cognitive break. "The 'recharge bike' is an energy refuelling station in the best sense of the word. It gives students the opportunity to recharge their batteries during lunch breaks," says Dennis Kehne, SGM Director and initiator of the project. The bike has also been technically upgraded: Thanks to the support of Paderborn-based company RLS Jakobsmeyer, the vehicle now has a mini-photovoltaic system with a 1.7 kW battery that can be used to charge smartphones directly on site.

Cooperation with the Studierendenwerk combines exercise with enjoyment

A new feature is the culinary offer that has been added through a cooperation with the Studierendenwerk. "Our common goal is to offer students added value through a wide range of enjoyment and exercise options," says Ulrich Schmidt, Managing Director of Studierendenwerk Paderborn. However, this is not a classic to-go principle. "We want students to get talking to each other over a cup of coffee or tea," says Erhard Wolf, Head of University Catering at the Studierendenwerk. In addition to French press coffee, the "recharge bike" therefore has comfortable Swedish chairs on board that invite you to linger.
