About the artist

Martin Rosswog studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, where he can be categorised as a member of the school of artistic photography founded by the artist couple Bernd and Hilla Becher. He soon developed his own artistic positions in his work, beginning with portraits that were still in the tradition of August Sander. Ethnographic field research played an important role in this, taking him all over Europe: Poland, Ukraine, Ireland, Scotland, Finland, Romania, Portugal and, last but not least, Münsterland. In the course of these journeys, he documented rural interiors and their inhabitants and spoke to contemporary witnesses. This enabled him to raise awareness of temporal processes and social changes.
