At the end of May, 19 professors took part in the ‘Emeriti Meeting’, the reunion of retired UPB professors, to learn about new projects and current topics at the university and to exchange ideas with former colleagues.

After a welcome from Prof Dr Volker Peckhaus, the Presidential Board's representative for alumni affairs, Dr Christof Eigner, Head of Laboratories and Scientific Infrastructure at the Institute of Photonic Quantum Systems (PhoQS), gave a lecture on the topic of ‘A journey into the quantum world’. In it, he will illustrate how quantum technologies are already part of our everyday lives, e.g. in the form of solar cells, laser and LED technology. In the future, other areas such as communication, meteorology and computer technology will increasingly utilise the possibilities of quantum technology. Eigner also presented the unique ‘PhoQS Lab’ building project on the campus. In the future, the modern building will offer an optimal infrastructure for research in the field of quantum photonics with a clean room for the production of quantum devices as well as highly specialised quantum optics laboratories for an international team of scientists from physics, electrical engineering, computer science and mathematics.

Prof Dr René Fahr, Vice President for Knowledge and Technology Transfer, welcomed the alumni on behalf of the Presidential Board and gave an overview of the topics that are moving the university. He reported on the opening of the new Start-up Campus OWL, the launch of the European University Alliance ‘COLOURS’ and the projects on the topic of sustainability in research, teaching and the university. These programmes contribute to increasing the attractiveness of the location and the visibility of the university on a national and international level.

Following the ‘Emeriti Meeting’, the participants took the opportunity to take part in the rollout of the UPBracing team's new electric racing car ‘PX424E’ in the Audimax. At universities all over the world, teams of students build single-seater racing cars and compete at international level in the ‘Formula Student’ design competition. Our university has also been involved in this endeavour since 2006. Last year, the group received the Alumni Award for ‘Outstanding Commitment’ for their extraordinary efforts.

The Emeriti Meetings take place once a year in the summer semester as a university event, providing insights into selected academic areas of the university and addressing topics and developments that affect the university. The meetings build on the active time of the professors at Paderborn University and are an annual meeting point for a reunion with colleagues.
