Location: Hybrid

The international lecture series on the history of the reception of the biblical figures Sarah and Hagar at the Institute of Protestant Theology will continue in the winter semester 2025/26. Lectures and discussions by and with renowned international and national scholars will take place on four dates. The first lecture on Wednesday, 22 October, will be given by Prof. Dr Juliana Claassens from Stellenbosch University in South Africa and Prof. Dr Meira Polliack from Tel Aviv University in Israel.

The lectures are entitled "'But a Promise is a Promise': Trauma and Recognition in the Sarah and Hagar Narrative (Genesis 16; 21) and Damon Galgut's 'The Promise'" and "Hagar's Reception among Medieval Judeo-Arabic Exegetes and Their Interreligious Context". The events will begin at 6.15 pm in room E2.310 with the reading of scholarly texts that deal with the consideration of Sara and Hagar in various theologies. Afterwards, a Zoom room will be opened for the lecturers and the international audience from 7 pm. This will be followed by two lectures in English and a 30-minute discussion round.

The lecture series is organised in cooperation with the Centre for Comparative Theology and Cultural Studies (ZeKK) as well as teachers and students from John Carroll University and the Tuohy Center for Interreligious Understanding in University Heights, Ohio, USA.
