Reaching the age limit

Permanent and temporary civil servants retire at the end of the month in which they reach the age limit applicable to them (see table). As a rule, the retirement age is reached at the age of sixty-seven (standard retirement age), unless a different age limit is specified by law.

This does not apply to university professors:
If the month in which a professor reaches the age limit falls during the lecture period, he or she shall retire at the end of the last month of the lecture period, notwithstanding Section 31 (1) sentence 1 LBG.

Application for retirement

Without proof of incapacity for service, a civil servant for life or for a fixed term may be retired on his or her application in accordance with Section 33 LBG NRW

1. at the earliest upon reaching the age of 63,

2. as a severely disabled person within the meaning of Section 2 (2) of the Ninth Book of the Social Code - Rehabilitation and Participation of Disabled Persons - (Article 1 of the Act of 19 June 2001, Federal Law Gazette I p. 1046), as amended, at the earliest on reaching the age of 60.

The application must be submitted informally to the Human Resources Department through official channels.

Procedure

Retirement takes place either

- by law (retirement after reaching the age limit) after the conditions have been established, or

- by administrative act (retirement on application).

Calculation of pension benefits

The LBV NRW is responsible for the amount of your pension (see also "Pension information").
