Secondary membership

If you are already enrolled at another university, you have two additional options for studying at Paderborn University.

"Gro?e Zweith?rerschaft"

  • Students can be admitted to a different (additional) degree programme at Paderborn University than at their first university.
  • Admission entitles the secondary membership student to take examinations and final examinations during the course of study (Bachelor's/Master's degree).
  • Secondary membership students receive a student licence, but no semester ticket.
  • If you are already enrolled as a secondary membership student at Paderborn University and wish to continue your studies in the following semester, you must submit the certificate of enrolment from your primary university when you re-register without being asked.

How do I apply?

In principle, the regular application and enrolment process must be followed. The regular application and enrolment deadlines for the desired (admission-free/restricted) degree programme also apply. Please note, however:

  • As part of the enrolment process, you have the option of indicating that you are applying for a secondary membership. Instead of proof of payment of the semester fees, you must then submit the enrolment certificate from the primary university.
  • When applying for a degree programme with restricted admission, you will also need a certificate from the primary university stating that the degree programme (or individual subjects) is not subject to admission restrictions.

How can I change my status (secondary membership <-> primary membership)?

You can apply electronically via PAUL > Studium > Antr?ge until 30.09. (winter term) / 31.03. (summer term) to change from a primary to a secondary membership or from a secondary to a primary membership at Paderborn University.

"Kleine Zweith?rerschaft"

  • Students may optain secondary membership to Paderborn University with the authorisation to attend individual courses if the courses are not offered at the primary university in the corresponding semester.
  • Admission entitles the holder to take examinations during the course of study, but not final examinations.
  • Enrolled students are given priority when allocating places on courses. Admission to the Kleine Zweith?rerschaft does not constitute a legal entitlement to attend specific courses.  If you are interested in a course, you must contact the relevant lecturer to find out whether you can participate.
  • Paderborn University charges a secondary membership fee of 100 euros.
  • Admission is always for the duration of one semester. If you wish to attend courses in another semester, you must apply for admission again.
  • Secondary membership students do not receive a semester ticket.

How do I apply?

  • The application form including all required documents (listed in the application) must be sent to the Registrar's Office within the relevant deadline by e-mail with the subject ‘Kleine Zweith?rerschaft für (Studiengang)’ to backoffice@upb.de.
  • After admission, a certification will be made available in PAUL.
