Further training SCHREIBEN LEHREN

For faculty and PhD researchers, we offer the continuing education programme SCHREIBEN LEHREN.

Aims and content of the programme:

The practice-oriented continuing education programme qualifies you to develop writing workshops and writing-intensive courses in your subject area and to accompany and advise students on their way into the writing culture of your subject. In the workshops, we teach methods and theoretical background information on the processes of academic work and writing and on writing counselling and didactics. This includes exercises for getting into writing, defining a topic and structuring ideas as well as techniques for excerpting texts, processing what you have read in your own text and revising what you have written so far.

Together we will work out how writing didactic units can be sensibly structured and guided. Feedback on students' texts and counselling on student work are another focus of the course. In addition, we will support you in designing your own specialised didactic writing course.

As a cross-sectional task, we would like to sensitise you to a basic attitude that understands academic writing as a subject-specific process and at the same time leaves room for the development of personal writing strategies. Methodologically, we realise this through reflective and interactive exercises, station learning and direct work on your own and other people's texts.

Scope of the training programme:

  • 365体育_足球比分网¥投注直播官网 phase: six fixed full-day continuing education workshops (8 units each, see below) and two full-day or four half-day workshops (16 units) of your choice from our programme on academic writing in research or our teaching workshops (64 units in total)
  • Subsequent practical phase: Implementation of your own didactic writing course (e.g. a didactic writing workshop lasting approx. ten hours or a writing-intensive course lasting two semester units) (24 units)
  • Concept discussion on the practical phase (2 units)
  • Final report and reflection (12 units)
  • Self-study (22 units)

Certification:

The entire course is certified by the Paderborn University and the Writing Competence Centre. It can also be credited proportionally in the higher education didactics certificate programme "Professional Teaching Competence for the University" of the Paderborn University's Office for Educational Innovation and Higher Education Didactics (see below). Alternatively, you can also attend individual courses of the continuing education programme as part of the university didactics certificate programme and, if you wish, take the writing didactics specialisation.

SCHREIBEN LEHREN: Workshops

Teaching writing I Writing processes and methods

Academic writing processes are diverse, both in terms of individual writing strategies and specialised writing practices. Participants will learn about different models of academic writing as well as specific writing-based methods.
Date: TBA

Teaching writing II Promoting academic writing development

This workshop focuses on writing development in degree programmes and enables teachers to design their courses in such a way that students not only learn subject-specific content, but also practise and understand academic reading and writing as practices typical of the discipline.
Date: TBA

Analysing and evaluating subject area texts

The aim of the workshop is to identify implicit knowledge and skills relating to the handling of specialised texts and to make them explicit for students. To this end, participants will be provided with text analysis tools and will work comparatively with the specialised texts they bring with them.
Date: TBA

Writing consultations for students

The workshop introduces methods for better assessing students' writing strategies and difficulties. Lecturers will learn questioning and discussion techniques to advise students in consultation hours focussed on their writing and work processes.
Date: TBA

Feedback for student texts

Text feedback for student texts is a common practice in teaching. Participants will reflect on previous individual approaches, expand their repertoire of feedback techniques and learn about text diagnosis and analysis tools for assessing student texts.
Date: TBA

Designing writing-intensive courses

The workshop enables lecturers to formulate central teaching and learning objectives in relation to academic work that match the subject content of their course. Based on this, they develop tasks for their students in order to gradually work towards these goals.
Date: TBA

Worth knowing

You are faculty or a PhD researcher (also without employment) at Paderborn University and you are working on an academic writing project, e.g. dissertation or habilitation.

The entire course (including the practical phase) can be credited proportionately with 16 AE in the Paderborn University's higher education didactics certificate programme "Professional Teaching Skills for Higher Education". Please contact the Office for Educational Innovation and University Didactics directly regarding the requirements.

As part of the higher education didactics certificate programme "Professional Teaching Skills for Higher Education", you can take the writing didactics specialisation as an alternative to the continuing education course SCHREIBEN LEHREN - the workshops are largely congruent.

In addition, you can also register for individual workshops as part of the university didactics certificate programme without taking part in the entire continuing education programme.

The training is free of charge. It is linked to the obligation to carry out a didactic writing programme for students at Paderborn University during the practical phase.
