In its latest recommendations (July 2023), the German Council of Science and Humanities specifically calls for the development and expansion of gender research at German universities. Especially in technical disciplines and medicine, there is a clear need to improve in order to be able to keep up with international comparisons, according to the chairman of the Science and Humanities Council, Wolfgang Wick. Institutional structures are needed to anchor gender research more broadly and also to offer young researchers career prospects. Specifically, the Council of Science and Humanities recommends that professorships with a gender studies denomination are created, especially in subjects where this has hardly been the case to date. Likewise, existing institutions, such as gender research centres and networks, should be adequately equipped, as they assume important functions for the further development of the research field. The Council of Science and Humanities also recommends the expansion of degree and certificate programmes with a focus on gender studies.
