Finding a Topic for your PhD Project

This workshop is a cooperation between the Kompetenzzentrum Schreiben and the Peer-Mentoring-Program Einblick!

A deep barrel, but with a bottom - that's what a good PhD topic should be. How is it possible to find such a topic? And how can one reconcile one's own demands and ideas with the requirements and interests of the field and the supervisors?

In this workshop, we will clarify central questions in the topic-finding process with short theoretical inputs and practical, partly creative exercises:

  • How do I find an interesting and motivating topic?
  • What do I have to consider when planning a topic?
  • How can I check whether my topic is viable and feasible?
  • How broad or narrow, broad or deep should my topic be?
  • How innovative does my PhD topic need to be?

This workshop is primarily aimed at students who are free to choose their own PhD topic. You do not have to have a fixed topic yet and can develop your first ideas in the workshop and check their feasibility. The workshop is a good basis for initial discussions with your supervisor about the content and scope of your planned project.

Date: Thursday, January 23, 2025, from 9.00 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. (online).

Important: The workshop will be held in German.

This workshop will be directed by Dr. Andrea Karsten.
