Overview
In a Nutshell
The Master’s Degree Program “Applied Neurosciences in Sports & Exercise” aims to produce experts in revealing the impact of neurosciences in combination with sports and exercise. The Master of Science has a strong scientific focus. At the same time, as represented by the “Applied” in the study program’s title, all contents are related and transferred into the real world and implemented in application-oriented learning arrangements with “real people” (i.e. patients, recreational or professional sportsmen and sportswomen, older and younger people, pupils, students and working people).
Academic Prerequisites
- A certificate of university entrance.
- Completion of an undergraduate degree (final grade 2.5 or better) in sports sciences, neurosciences, healthcare sciences or physical therapy (180 credit points) at a German state university or a similar qualification from a foreign country.
The Examinations Board shall determine compliance with these requirements.
Language Prerequisites
- Proficiency of English language at level B2 of the European Reference Framework for Languages (CEFR).
German profieciency is not needed for this course, since it can only be studied in English.

Course of Study
What’s this Course about?
The international M.Sc. “Applied Neurosciences in Sports & Exercise” (ANSE) focuses on neuroscientific aspects of physical activity in sports and health care settings. Academic knowledge and research skills are conveyed within the two major scopes “Neurological and Neurodegenerative Diseases and Injuries” and “Training and Performance Development”. Graduates will be enabled to pursue careers in related research or applied clinical occupational fields.
The Master’s program is taught in English. All examinations are in English.
Study Contents
What is the structure of the course?
Course Objectives and Areas of Specialization
- Education within the key area ?Therapy of Neurological and Neurodegenerative Diseases and Injuries“ (M1, M6, M8) focuses on the impartment of specific knowledge of symptoms and syndromes of diseases and injuries within the nervous system (i.e. different types of dementia and epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, concussion). Furthermore, the impact of physical activity in prevention and rehabilitation will be centered in different learning arrangements (literature based, experimental, applied).
- Education within the second key area ?Training and Performance Development“ (M2, M7, M9) focuses on the impartment of specific knowledge of the central nervous activity during training and competition (i.e. mechanisms leading to fatigue, injury, overtraining). Furthermore, the impact of appropriately managing exposure and recovery periods will be centered in different learning arrangements (literature based, experimental, applied).
- Gaining methodological competences (M3, M4, M5) represents another key area of education.

This course plan will come into effect starting from winter semester 2022/23.

This course of studies gives you the opportunity to choose your desired areas of qualification, as you will be able to choose 2 out of 3 modules as you advance in your studies. You have the choice between:

Internship
The course of studies "Applied Neurosciences in Sports and Exercise" requires you to partake in an internship. Through observing and self-contained working in a potentially relevant occupational field, the internship is supposed to create the possibility for students to compare the choice of academic study with the occupational reality and furthermore, help realizing a proper occupational decision. The internship is designed full-time for four weeks. In well-grounded conditions it is possible to split the four weeks. It is based on an individual preference of the students whether the internship takes place in an English speaking setting. The main benefits are:
- Knowledge about occupational settings
- Integrating learning outcomes from the study programme into occupational practice
- Consequences for occupational orientation

Graduates of the Master’s Degree Program “Applied Neurosciences in Sports & Exercise” will be qualified to pursue an international professional or research career in the innovative and growing area of neuroscientific aspects related to physical activity and sports & exercise. Depending on individual’s preferences further professional or scientific work could focus on the
- improvement of prevention and rehabilitation of neurological and neurodegenerative diseases (i.e. dementia, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis) by a differentiated application of the drug ‘physical activity’
- improvement of prevention and rehabilitation of neurological injuries (i.e. Return-to-play after concussion)
- improvement of exposure and recovery management in sports and exercise from a neuroscientific perspective to increase performance and minimize the risk of injuries.

Our “Einblick!” (insights) peer mentoring programme gives female students in the final stages of their degree the chance to discuss doing a PhD and to prepare for a PhD. Participants are teamed up with a female PhD student, who, based on her own experience, gives them tips and strategies to assist them with their decision to pursue a PhD. The aim of the programme is to give participants insights into the kind of academic and research work involved in a PhD and for them to talk to their mentor about her experience in order to build on their personal and professional skills and broaden their development opportunities.

Orientation Days

Culture
A regular theater program at our Studionbühne, slams and readings, Big Band and university choir are just a few examples of our diverse cultural offerings. A special highlight is our AStA summer festival: up to 15,000 people make the pilgrimage every year to what is probably Germany's largest outdoor campus festival and enjoy the summer party atmosphere with numerous local student bands as well as well-known headliners on various stages.
Campus
Almost all of Uni Paderborn's buildings are located on campus. There are green meadows to relax in and plenty of places to eat and drink: Mensa Academica and Mensa Forum, the Grill|Café and Café Bona Vista. Everything is within easy walking distance. Our library is also centrally located and is a great place to study thanks to its good opening hours.

Living in accomodations close to campus is possible: The Studierendenwerk Paderborn offers you places in halls of residence directly on campus or in the immediate vicinity. But you will also find what you are looking for on the usual accommodation portals: Both in the immediate vicinity of the university and city center, as well as in the individual Paderborn districts.
